About Us

Our History

In 1987 Centurion Academy was established to cater for the needs of learners requiring English-medium education. The school was founded by Mr KG Fisher on the 13th of October 1987, at St Albans Anglican church in Westgate.

At the time, Mr. Fisher was in charge of a Saturday school for children from Soweto that offered an English and math upgrade program. The name of that Saturday school was "Greenlight Academy."

Due to gentle parent pressure and encouragement, the school went into full-time mode from January 1988, at 22 King George Street, Joubert Park, under the principalship of Mr KG Fisher.

On the 11th November 1988, Mr Fisher transferred his sole ownership of the school to become a Community Educational Trust: Centurion College Trust.

One of the main challenges of the Trust was to accommodate learners returning from Exile under the auspices of the Batlagae Trust.

The school was divided into four sectors administered by four Deputy Principals. The Junior Primary under Mrs D. Gosher, the Senior Primary was under Mrs Lambridge, the Junior High was under Mr S. Ismail and the Senior High school was under Mr J. Duplessie.

In 1990, Centurion College established a choir under Miss P. Moloi (Ramaisa).

The choir was involved in many projects, for example, we sang at the Roodepoort Eisteddfod, and also took part in the SABC School Music Competition. The school choir grew more feathers when we sang in the Tuata Choir Festivals where we obtained good positions. We also have some students who became stars in the music industry, namely, Nimrod Nkosi, Thembi Seete and Nonhlanhla Mdluli. Miss P. Moloi (Ramaisa) was later joined by Mr M. Mkhomi who was also in charge of the choir.

The school has also been competing with other schools in various mediums of Art.

In 2019, the Speech Contestants took part in a competition and won. Our learners have also been taking part in Drama Competitions and have won many trophies. Some have been selected by the Outreach Foundation in Hillbrow Theatre and have participated in competitions in Grahamstown Arts Festival as well as going to Germany to perform in the German Arts Festival where they also won and brought home some trophies.

A Marimba Band has also been established. In 2021, the school managed to buy our own Marimba instruments and our learners are able to practise almost daily.

At that time, Mr K. Fisher was the principal of the entire school. Following Mr Fisher’s department from the school in 2003, the Board of Trustees nominated Mr M. Nzima as Principal and Mrs PT. Ramaisa as Deputy Principal.

In 2009, Mr M. Nzima left and Mrs PT. Ramaisa took over as the principal, supported by Mr M. Moloi and Mr K. Vanzeeberg as Deputies. Mr SJ. Mlangeni was appointed as Deputy Principal in 2018.

Since then, Mrs Ramaisa and Mr Mlangeni have continued to serve as our Principal and Deputy Principal, respectively.

Our Motto:
"We are the Future"

The school is 37 years old this year and is still running smoothly as we continue to strive for the best.

We presently have over 800 learners ranging from Grades 1 to 12 and employee 50 personnel; which includes Educators, Administrative, Security and Support Staff.

We also have a Feeding Scheme which is sponsored by MES and caters for the entire school.

Our matric results improve yearly. We have maintained a strong pass record between 97% and 100% for the last five years, typically earning bachelor's and diplomas.
Our Vision and Mission Statement

To produce globally conscious, sensitive citizens, and put them on a firm basis on the road to achieving their maximum potential. Offering a holistic education to promote in our learner’s empathy, compassion, and respect for diversity and for the environment.
